State Rep. Mark Matthiesen Presents
Legislation to Provide Relief to Missouri Taxpayers

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Representative Mark Matthiesen wants to protect Missouri families from suffering because of a property tax bill they may not be able to afford during the holiday season.

Matthiesen recently presented his legislation, HB 1194, to the House Ways and Means Committee. His bill would prohibit a county collector from imposing any interest or fees on delinquent personal property taxes until after May 1 of the year following the year when the taxes were due.

Matthiesen said the window of time where no interest or fees can be added to the tax bill would allow families some much-needed flexibility so they can pay their bill during a time of the year that is less stressful financially.

As costs rise and more Missourians are facing financial difficulties, the yearly fee for the privilege of owning a vehicle should not continue to force families to choose between the additional costs incurred during the holiday season and paying the government, said Matthiesen, R-O’Fallon.

He added, While this legislation does not reduce the overall tax burden, it will allow families the option of paying this debt in a more appropriate time of the year.

Matthiesen’s bill now awaits a vote by the House Ways and Means Committee. Matthiesen said he is hopeful this important piece of tax relief legislation can make it to the House floor for discussion. Lawmakers have until Friday, May 12 to secure approval for their legislation from both the House and Senate.
